The Mysterion

Autor/ Author: Kabir Helminski
Verlag/ Publ.: Shambhala Publ.

Rumi and the Secret of Becoming Fully Human

A contemporary exploration into the meaning and possibility of our human existence, through the universal insights of the 13th-century Persian poet and Sufi mystic Rumi—by pre-eminent Rumi translator, Kabir Helminski.

The 13th-century poet and mystic Rumi has become one of the most popular spiritual voices of our time—known and loved by people of many faiths and worldviews for his rich metaphors, images, poems, and stories. The Mysterion deepens our appreciation of his teachings by illuminating both the practical psychological dimension behind them, as well as the universal spiritual truths they offer about what it means to be human.

In this philosophical survey, Kabir Helminski, one of the foremost translators and writers of Sufi texts, gives us a contemporary lens through which to view and understand the “Mysterion,” the unifying concept that bridges the human and the divine—and that connects the individual soul with spiritual Reality. This book is centered on that core, unifying concept of the Mysterion: the essence and intrinsic meaning of being human.

Rumi, says Helminski, would suggest that in our human existence we might accomplish many marvels, but they will amount to little if we neglect cultivating the divine potential within us. Like a mirror, he says, we can reflect a spectrum of divine qualities depending on how polished and clean our mirror is. Likewise, our mirrors can become distorted and corroded by egoism and negativity. Our practical work, says Helminski (and Rumi), is to remove distortions from our souls and align ourselves with this higher order reality and divine agency, through humility, reverence, surrender, and love.

Teachings of Rumi

Teachings of Rumi

Autor/ Author: Harvey, Andrew
Verlag/ Publ.: Shambhala Publ.

This collection of versions of Rumi by Andrew Harvey contains some of the master's most luminous verse, along with selections from his lesser-read prose works, with the aim of presenting a balanced view of his teaching that includes both the high-flying love of God and the rigorous path of discipline essential for those who seek it.

Jelalludin Rumi (1207-1273) led the quiet life of an Islamic teacher in the central Anatolia (modern Turkey) until the age of thirty-seven, when he met a wandering dervish named Shams Tabriz—through whom he encountered the Divine Presence in a way that utterly transformed him. The result of this epiphany was the greatest body of mystical poetry the world has ever seen, and the establishment of a spiritual movement that would eventually stretch from Africa to China, enduring to our own day.

Andrew Harvey is the author of more than thirty books. He has published several other collections of Rumi, including The Way of Passion.

The Essential Rumi

The Essential Rumi

Autor/ Author: Barks, Coleman
Verlag/ Publ.: HarperCollins

The ecstatic, spiritual poetry of Rumi is more popular than ever, and The Essential Rumi continues to be far and away the top-selling title of all Rumi books. With the addition of many new poems and a new introduction, The Essential Rumi is now clearly the definitive, and most delightful selection of Rumi s poetry. The best-selling Rumi book ever is now better than ever! This revised and expanded edition of the comprehensive one-volume edition of America s most popular poet includes a new introduction by Coleman Barks, and 81 new poems never published before.

No translator could do greater justice to the gorgeous simplicity of Rumi"s poetry than Coleman Barks has done here. These exquisite renderings of the 13th-century Persian mystic"s words into modern free verse capture all the "inner searching, the delicacy, and simple groundedness" that characterise Rumi"s poetry while remaining faithful to the images, tone and spiritual message of the originals. Barks"s introductions to each of the 27 sections (described as "playful palimpsests spread over Rumi"s imagination", and "meant to confuse scholars who would divide Rumi"s poetry into the accepted categories") are themselves wonderful achievements of a poetic imagination; searching explanations of unfamiliar concepts and funny stories provide colourful background and frame the selections as no dry historical exegesis could.

While Barks"s stamp on this collection is clear, it in no way interferes with the poems themselves; Rumi"s voice leaps off these pages with an ecstatic energy that leaves readers breathless. There are poems of love, rage, sadness, pleading and longing; passionate outbursts about the torture of yearning for his beloved and the sweet pleasure that comes from their union; amusing stories of sexual exploits or human weakness; and quiet truths about the beauty and variety of human emotion. More than anything, Rumi makes plain the unbridled joy that comes from living life fully, urging us always to put aside our fears and take the risk to do so. As he says: "The way of love is not / a subtle argument. / The door there is devastation. / Birds make great sky-circles / of their freedom. / How do they learn it? / They fall, and falling, / they"re given wings." --Uma Kukathas

Coleman Barks, Professor Emeritus at the University of Georgia, is Rumi's premier English translator. He lives in Athens, Georgia.

CD: Rumi-Voice of Longing 2CDs

Autor/ Author: Barks, Coleman
Verlag/ Publ.: Sounds True

In the seven centuries since the death of Jelaluddin Rumi in 1273, the world has come to know and thrill to his sacred poetry. In concert with the tabla and sitar, his writing is part of a religious tradition that is believed to excite "spiritual heroism," embracing the holiness of love, lamentation, battle, and the longing for God.
“Rumi: Voice of Longing” collects nearly 100 of Rumi"s most memorable quatrains, presented here for the first time on two superbly remastered CD recordings. Includes musical accompaniment by Marcus Wise on tablas and David Whetstone on sitar, and a special appearance by renowned poet Robert Bly.
Translated and performed by the Rumi scholar Coleman Barks, these works echo with a spiritual complexity that defies their outward simplicity. As Sufism acknowledges the truth of other religions, so does Rumi"s poetry reflect universal themes: the search for the highest truth, the mystery of surrender, the longing to overcome ego imprisonment. Rumi: Voice of Longing captures the silence, the love, and the playfulness that make each experience with this work one of sacred wonder.

The Purity of Desire

The Purity of Desire

Autor/ Author: Ladinsky, Daniel
Verlag/ Publ.: Penguin Group

Renowned for his poignant renderings of Hafiz"s mystical texts, Daniel Ladinsky here captures the beauty, intimacy, and musicality of Jalaluddin Rumi, one of the world"s most revered and widely read poets.

Rumi was born in 1207 on the eastern edge of the Persian Empire. Fleeing from the invasion of the Mongol armies of Genghis Khan, Rumi and his family settled in Turkey, where his father was a scholar and mystic. Later, Rumi succeeded his father in leading a dervish college (a divinity school). His life was transformed in 1244, when he met Shams-e Tabriz, a wandering dervish. Shams became Rumi"s beloved companion and doorway to God. For Rumi, who believed that the soul comes alive in the presence of a real teacher, love was the inspiration for all his poetry.

In collaboration with Nancy Owen Barton, and with learned insight and a delicate touch, Ladinsky explores in these one hundred poems the nuances of desire and captures the compelling wisdom of one of Islam"s most revered artistic and religious voices.
